Green Frog Productions

This DVD is a completely re-edited version of an old classic - right back to the original source material! - "Better than VHS as day is to night" The action on this DVD is a result of many railfan trips by noted rail photographer Emery Gulash who, from Chicago to the West, produced an incredible chronology of the Santa Feover a 30 year span from 1952 to 1980! As Emery says: "To me the Santa Fe was unique with its outstanding passenger trains, fast freights, great trackage and a great display of semaphore signals. It was the epitome of long distance railroads. So I spent much footage at many different locations enjoying the action and character of this great railroad." For this film Emery assembled all of those pleasant encounters, FT freight units, PA passenger power and a variety of switchers and road trains. The Warbonnet paint scheme and the change to the blue scheme is also covered. There are a great number of incredible shots of the famous passenger fleet, interspersed with freights over a vast portion of the line. A collectors item. See ARJ-DVD "American Legendary Rail Journeys".

Green Frog
Following in the footsteps of the incredible and highly successful Santa Fe Odyssey Vol. 1, comes Volume 2. The first volume was filmed over a 23 year period. Coverage starts in Illinois and continues west to include California. Amtrak is now firmly entrenched and so you will see plenty of passenger trains and with its new second generation diesels there are Santa Fe freights galore, including some of the older transitory diesel paint and colour schemes. The Tracks of the BLACK BEAR
The Algoma Central, rich in history and renowned for its rugged scenery.  Affectionately known as the 'Tracks of the Black Bear', the ACR provides a vital link in the movement of freight and is one of North America's most popular passenger roads.  After operating as an independent railway since 1899, the Algoma Central became part of Wisconsin Central's family of regional railways in 1995.  Along with this change came revised operating practices, different motive power and new business.  Rail Innovations captures the 'new' Algoma Central during both the beauty of fall and the harshness of winter.  Be onboard and trackside as WC SD-45s and AC F-units move freight and passenger trains across Algoma Country.  Wisconsin Central's Algoma Central is mainline railroading through some of North America's most spectacular scenery.
Algoma Central Tour Trains

Journeying north from Sault Ste. Marie, the Algoma Central challenges awesome rock formations, glides through mixed forests of maple, birch and pine and skirts the pristine waters of northern lakes and rivers.  114 miles north, the famous Agawa Canyon, with its rugged beauty, waterfalls, picnic areas and hiking trails makes for the perfect summer and fall destination.  Winter in Algoma Country is breathtaking and what better way to see it than aboard 'The Snow Train'!  Clad in a mantle of snow and adorned with frozen waterfalls and rivers provides a dramatic contrast to those seen during summer and fall.  From trackside and aboard the locomotives, enjoy the colour of fall, the splendour of Agawa Canyon and the harshness of a winter blizzard.

Highball Productions

UP over the former Western Pacific between SaIt Lake City and Winnemucca, including the paired track with SP (pre merger) through Palisade Canyon.  The ‘Trains’ article called this line ‘Trains in a desolate landscape’ and it sure is.  We got out and about on the salt flats, Wendover Hill, Arnold Loop, which to my mind is simply splendid, ranks up there with Crawford.  You can see westbounds 13 or 14 miles away, then they round the loop and head over Silver Zone Pass. We followed the line through the sage brush to Hogan tunnel, then across Tine Desert (VERY lonely) to Wells, Palisade Canyon and Wininemucca.  Splendid desolation.

D 129    Highball Along The Columbia (DVD-R) [2 Disc Set]         180 min            $47.00

Highball Productions

What a wonderful area the Pacific North West is.  Earlier in 1996 we flew to Portland OR and worked from Troutdale to Hinkle on the Union Pacific and from Cape Horn Tunnel to near Pasco on Burtington Northern Santa Fe.  Access was pretty good on both sides of the river, except that UP was by the Interstate.  We were amazed at the scenery; from rain forest near Portland to the high desert, also the weather; rain at the coast to dry inland.

We caught UP's E units on the Office Car Special from the BNSF side of the river and chased him.  He was hitting the detectors at 80 mph.  The only reason we got a shot was because he was slowed for a meet near one of the dams.  What a pretty train though.  Good job the State trooper was busy!  We were pleased to find cabooses on BNSF, these are on the trains that cross the Columbia at Wishram and turn south to Klamath Falls.  On several occasions we managed to get trains on both sides of the river into the picture.  Eleven days of shooting went into this program.  There is some beautiful lighting and some fabulous scenery.  SD60Ms, C40s and SD40-2s predominate on UP and SD40-2s and GP40s on the BNSF. Not much sign of the merger except a couple of Warbonnets.

Centennial #6936 puts in a guest appearance.

D 137    WINTER ON KICKING HORSE PASS [DVD-R]                                 90 min                     $45.00
By Highball Productions
We set off for Kicking Horse Pass in February 1997 after one of the coldest periods on record.  Happily it warmed up a little for our visit, relatively speaking.  There was still plenty of snow about, but with blue skies and sun the whole area looked stunning.  Kicking Horse Pass is Canadian Pacific's crossing of the Great Divide in Canada's Rocky Mountains, the highest railroad summit in Canada.  It runs through some of the most spectacular scenery in North America.  We shot at the two most famous rail locations on the continent, Morant's Curve and the Spiral Tunnels - and many more stunning locations full of action, but regretfully one of the vagrancies of winter shooting was a ten foot snow drift that prevented us getting to the conventional shot of the tunnels.  However join us for an exciting winter journey as we chase Action Red SD 40-2s through the heart of the Rocky Mountains from Banff, Alberta through Lake Louise and over Kicking Horse Pass, through the Spiral Tunnels to Field, then through Kicking Horse Valley to Golden, British Columbia.

D 142    WINTER ON MONTANA RAIL LINK [DVD-R]                         120 min                 $45.00
By Highball

Montana Rail Link in the heart of the Big Sky Country is the operator of the old 582 mile long Northern Pacific line across Montana.  Full of breathtaking scenery and hard mountain grades, it now forms a unique link in the Burlington Northern Santa Fe mainline.  A lot of heavy freight is routed over the steeply graded line.  We travelled the length of the MRL in February 1997, braving cold and snow to bring you exciting action of one of regional railroading’s finest.  We take you through the blowing snows of Bozeman Pass with GP9s and C44-9Ws to the curves and steep grades of the legendary Mullan Pass, from the bleakness of Winston Hill to the scenic splendor of the Clark Fork and the semaphores of Lake Pend Oreille.  There is lots of different power battling the elements from MRL’s GP9s, SD19s, F45s, SD45s, SD45-2s to BNSF’s 'Pumpkins' and 'Warbonnets'.  Colour / Narration / Sound

D 146    THE POKEY ~ Norfolk Southern's Pocohontas Division [DVD-R]                120 min                    $45.00

 By Highball
Taped in the spring of 1997 when the new widecab GE's were out and about in force, both on the point and as helpers. This is coal country, and we caught lots of heavy coal drags twisting through the narrow valleys and bIasting up the grades and through the tunnels that make up this highly scenic route. NS still uses cabooses for back up moves on the mine runs, I was surprised to find them backing up for 15 or 20 miles. Imagine a new C40-9W on one end and a caboose on the other. Also caught a coal train at War Eagle being run around by half a dozen trains.

D 150    BC RAIL [DVD-R]                                                                                     120 min                     $45.00
By Highball Productions
BC's auto tag says "beautiful British Columbia". BC Rail, formerly the British Columbia Railway and Pacific Great Eastern, is unique amongst railroads, both large and small. Its trains are led by a fleet of GE C40-8 CMs, a model only found in Canada.  It runs through spectacular and varied scenery26000 revenue car loads on a system that can be divided into two sections, the North Vancouver to Prince George and north of Prince George where a number of lines feed the mainline.  In this tape we concentrate on the Vancouver to Prince George mainline.  We travelled the 1800 miles to North Vancouver in August 1997 to fulfil a long time personal ambition.  We got a quick look at a rebuilt RS18 switching the yard, a brief look at the Royal Hudson along Howe Sound, then concentrated on the freights.  The big GE C40-8CM cowls are very much in evidence and look handsome.  The scenery, especially north of Lillooet in the Fraser River Valley, is just magnificent and we got some great shots of trains clinging to the canyon walls, to river banks and lake shores.  They looked really good snaking in and out from between the bluffs.  We got into most of the famous locations, Britannia, Squamish, Cheakamus, Green River, Tisdall, Birken, Darcy, Seton Lake, Lilloet, Polley, Fountain, Gibbs, Glenfrazer, Pavillion, Moran, Kelly Lake and lots more.  We were thrilled to find a pair of C420s switching at Prince George and took a quick trip to Tacheed for a look at the electrics.  A very interesting railroad in magnificent scenery. D 151    MARIAS PASS [DVD-R]                                                                    120 min                     $45.00
By Highball Productions

BNSF's crossing of the Continental Divide over Marias Pass on the former Great Northern mainline is, at 5213 feet, the lowest crossing of the Divide in the lower 48 states.  The mainline skirts the southern boundary of Glazier National Park and is renowned for its scenic beauty.  This is the High Line Sub, part of a busy east/west line and features helpers, snowsheds and large bridges.  It is fall 1997 and we follow the line from Shelby, Montana, on the high prairie, west through the foothills of the Rocky Mountains at Browning and up the eastern slops of Marias Pass to the Summit.  There are lots of ‘Pumpkins’, including the new version of the scheme on the OCS.  All the famous locations are visited; Grizzly, Bison, Two Medicine Bridge, the snowsheds.  Summit, Marias, Java, Essex and lots more.  Beautiful fall weather and foliage, stunning scenery and varied motive power and paint schemes make Marias Pass the railfan experience of a lifetime.

D 153    RAILS WEST 1967 - 1971 [DVD-R]                                                      59 min                     $48.00
By Herron Rail

In 1967, Donald J. Krofta began filming freight and passenger train action on America's western railroads.  This program presents the highlights of his beautiful colour film footage.  You’ll find Gas Turbines (with their distinctive jet whine) and Diesels on the Union Pacific with Diesels on S.P., W.P., A.T.S.F., BN (with diesels of member railroads NP, GN,

C.B.& Q.), D&RGW, DCS, MKT, SLSF, and ROCK ISLAND.  This was a good time to film the action since each railroad had its own colour scheme and a wide variety of freight and passenger cars. This was the dusk of the pre-merger era that has brought the end of individuality to many American railroads.  Don Krofta's film of eastern railroads is legendary. In this program he gives you a taste of railroading in the west.

D 155    ALONG THE FEATHER RIVER (DVD-R)                                                        120 min        $45.00

Highball Productions

Union Pacific's former Western Pacific main line runs through the incredible Feather River Canyon between Oroville and Portola, California.  We visited the Canyon in October 1997 to fulfil another longtime personal ambition.  BNSF has trackage rights, and with UP'S armor yellow, SP grey, C&NW yellow, Santa Fe blue and yellow, BN Cascade green and BNSF Warbonnet red and silver, and leased locos, the route is a rainbow of colour.  Between Oroville and Portola the line climbs 4649ft in 115 miles and is accompanied by the parallel road and the Feather River.  Serpentine Canyon is a photographer's delight of S-curves, Keddie is arguably the most recognizable railfan location in the country and Williams Loop has trains crossing over themselves. An incredible railfan experience.

D 156    BEYOND HOPE - Along the Thompson & Fraser Rivers [DVD-R]                   120 min        $45.00
By Highball Productions
Beyond the little town of Hope BC lies the Canyon of the Thompson and Fraser Rivers (hence the title). Canadian Pacific and Canadian National run mostly on opposite sides of the canyon through magnificent scenery on their way to the Pacific. The lower canyon of the Fraser is in the heart of the forest, mostly pine trees clinging to massive granite slopes.  The Thompson is in the rain shadow of the coastal mountains with sparse vegetation on unstable, almost vertical slopes.  We follow CP and CN along the Fraser and Thompson from Hope to Kamloops lakes, a distance of about 150 miles.  We found both new and old power from both roads, often with trains on both sides at the same time.  We also caught the Rocky Mountaineer and the American Orient Express, a splendid train. CP came through the canyons first and has the easier route, being joined by Canadian Northern Pacific (later Canadian National) thirty years later.  CNP failed soon after, having had to contend with building on the wrong side of the canyon, but the route is often more spectacular than CP's easier route.

D 160    SUPERFLEET & SAGEBRUSH ~ BNSF ON THE SELIGMAN SUB (DVD-R)                       90 min           $47.00

Warbonnets still rule on the Seligman Sub.  Sure, the merger shows, but there are still lots of units wearing one of the best looking paint schemes ever.  The new 700 series GE's are out in force, looking superb in the beautiful winter sunshine.  There is some new ‘Heritage’ paint around, and not only on C44's!  There are some solid sets of Cascade Green, but not a lot of blue and yellow.  This is impressive, heavy duty main line railroading at its best, with howling, high speed double stacks, and roaring manifests dragging up-grade.  We cover the line from Needles, CA to Winslow, AZ, including the big bridge at Topock, the Sacramento Wash, Kingman Canyon, Crozier Canyon, Seligman, the Crookton line relocation, Williams Junction, Supai Summit, Maine, Darling, Canyon Diablo, Sunshine and lots more.

Heavy traffic and scenic locations like the famed Sullivan's Curve, together with a rainbow of paint schemes from both UP and BNSF make Cajon a railfan's paradise. Taped in April 1998, the hills are green, there are bright blue skies and the mountains are snow covered. Lots of SD45's (including a 7 SD45 lashup!) and GP60M's together with new power, make for interesting railroading. Check out the changes and scenic splendor of Cajon Pass, you'll be glad you did.

D 184    CHANGE IN THE TEHACHAPI'S ~ BNSF's MOJAVE SUB [DVD-R]            120 min        $45.00

 By Highball Productions
BNSF's Mojave sub runs from Barstow to Bakersfield, California, crossing the Mojave Desert and the Tehachapi Mountains in the process. From Mojave to Bakersfield, BNSF uses trackage rights on the UP (former SP). Both BN/SF and UP/SP mergers are in full swing, and the line is a riot of coloful locomotives, the mountains are wearing spring green and traffic is heavy, we even had a surprise visit from the 6936, making for some awesome railfanning. If you can't visit the Tehachapi's in spring, this tape is the next best thing. All the famous locations and then some. Taped in April, 1999.

D 186    CANADIAN PACIFIC's MOUNTAIN SUB & ROGERS PASS [DVD-R]
by Highball Productions                                                                                                                    120 min      $45.00
The description 'superb, magnificent and overwhelming' even though vastly overused cannot adequately do justice to the scenery on CPs Mountain Sub, the line over Rogers Pass. The line runs through the Rockies and the Selkirks and is a challenge even to today's high horsepower locomotives. It is one of the most difficult places in the world to run a railroad with narrow valleys, steep grades and heavy snowfalls with the attendant risk of avalanches. AC4400s and SD90MACs challenge the grades and big as they are, they are dwarfed by the magnificent snow covered peaks. The engineering difficulties in building Rogers Pass, CP's crossing of the Continental Divide, were formidable as were the problems facing CP when they built the new line through Rogers Pass (opened May 1989). The sub runs for 125 miles from Field to Revelstoke, British Columbia, through some of the most spectacular scenery on the continent. Shot in June 1999 all the famous locations are seen, including both old and new Stoney Creek bridges, Mount MacDonald and Shaughnessy tunnels.

Yellowhead Pass proper is west of the Great Divide in British Columbia, but we followed the Yellowhead route from Hinton, Alberta (mp 184) on the Edson Sub to Taverna BC (mp 20) on the Robson Sub via Red Pass (mp 43) - in June 1999 to bring you splendid images of hard working power in superb scenery. The Canadian, the best looking passenger train around and its baby sister The Skeena, make appearances together with CN's unusual power; cowl body EMDs and GEs and new SD75Is and C44-9Ws. This is an area of great natural beauty, a great portion of the line being in Jasper National Park.

By Charles Smiley

The commuter operation is only one of the themes in this tape.  All San Francisco rail transit freight services are covered. Examination of SP and other locomotives both visually and in fact-packed narration, is extensive. Locomotive coverage includes the Fairbanks Morse Trainmasters, ALCOs, other SP units, Sacramento Northern electric's, etc.  There is Key System, Western Pacific, Santa Fe and the IER east bay line.  If it was bay area railroading, it is included right up to 1997 with Union Pacific ownership of the SP.  Charles Smiley has done an excellent job of locating old still photos, timetables and other graphics to illustrate this tape.  Motion pictures from five different sources extend the coverage in time back into the 1950's.  His research has made possible a detailed narration that will have the railfan sitting on the edge of his seat and possibly rewinding some scenes to drink in all the information.

There is rare bipolar footage and a delightful sequence on box cabs incl. seeing them hauled out of the roundhouse for making up into sets on the ready track. The antiquated method used would give present day health & safety 'experts' apoplexy!

By Highball Productions
Commonly called "The Blues', Oregon's Blue Mountains pose a formidable obstacle to UP trains on this important route to the Pacific North West.  This is the La Grande sub which runs from Hinkle OR to Nampa ID, conquering several grades in the process.  West of La Grande the line twists and turns through forested mountains with tight curves and a ruling grade which exceeds 2% at times.  East of La Grande the line runs through rolling hills covered with ponderosa pine and sage brush.  The railroad encounters Encina Hill with its 2.2% grades and the big horseshoe curve near Durkee.  This is DPU country with remote controlled helpers. With its thundering power, this tape will excite you time and time again through every twist and turn.  A “La Grande” tape to have and watch time and time again.
